One of the most
discouraging things about pursuing a career in fashion design is staying
original and designing lots of ideas that are new. Coming up with new, original creations
is something I've learnt is highly valuable in the industry, however sometimes
like many artists we may have a mind/ creativity block, which stops us from
being able to come up with more designs. Here are some tips I've learnt.
TIP #1 LACK OF
INSPIRATION IS A MYTH. Inspiration is everywhere. Take more pictures. Find more
research. Look at archive collections from designers. The more you know the
more you can create.
TIP #2 COMBINE AND
TAKE AWAY. All you need is 2 designs to create 4. Take two designs and pick a
few things you like/ or hate about both. Put these into a new design (this will
be design 3). Redraw this new design and take away 1 thing you like or hate about
design 3 (to create design 4).
TIP #3 COLOUR. What
might this design look like in burgundy, or beige or maroon? Invest in some
promarkers for quick splashes of colour, and test what designs might look like
in different colours. When it comes to clothing... COLOUR IS EVERYTHING!
TIP #4 START SMALL.
THE DEVILS IN THE DETAILS. The instant assumption when designing is to go big,
designing extravagant gowns and dresses. However why not try something more
simple like tops or bottoms, Think what would you/ or your ideal customer want to
wear?
TIP #5 DON’T GET
DISCOURAGED. We've all got to start somewhere. But speed drawing and producing
lots of ideas takes practice. Keep going and share your designs on Instagram or
Twitter so you can see how far you’ve come!
So those were
some tips on how to create design ideas and stay motivated! I hope you've taken
something away from this. Thanks for reading.
